I agree completely with Patricia's points about what tends to characterize successful charter schools: small class sizes, commitment to ongoing assessment of students, teaching to mastery, and an effective professional development program. I would add, however, the need to have outstanding teachers teach the students. It is my experience in founding and directing small charter schools that outstanding teachers look for schools that are truly committed to the previous four points. You highly qualified teachers out there: wouldn't you be attracted to a charter school that truly "walked the talk" about commitment to these four qualities?
