I agree with the comments posted and thought I would share our recent endeavor to find a replacement for a teacher (who I counseled out of teaching). In CT all teachers in charter schools must be state certified so that was a given for anyone applying to our postings. In addition, I contact everyone who applies and I send out information about our mission and about our financial picture. Our salaries are low compared to the traditional schools in our state and I like to be up front about this. Some interested candidates excuse themselves but all thank me for being so frank. I then pre-interview with them visiting our school. For the final interview, I form a team that includes a senior student, a teacher, my administrative assistant and me. I also, before this interview send them three questions to answer: one about differentiating instruction, another about communicating with parents and finally a third about integrating curriculum. All members of the team score the interviewees and we then compare and select. I have worked very hard to raise salaries at our school. I do give stipends for extra duties and allow my staff flex time when needed. I work with staff members on grants to add funds into their classrooms and share with my Governing Council, each year, the need to keep raising our salaries and recognizing the great job our staff is doing.
