I like all of the things that have been said to date.
I would like to reinforce the importance of having a clear mission that is included in the job description. Candidates should be made fully aware of the exact nature of the job - including the potentially negative aspects of working in a small setting. The creativity and flexibility common in a smaller setting is appealing to some but intimidating to others.
It is also crucial for teachers to be extremely knowledgeable in their subject area and excited about it. This doesn't necesarily mean that a person has to have a degree in that subject, however.
