As we move forward in the process of planning and developing an educational program for middle schools students this question looms before us. The educational environment we are creating won't be recognizable to the traditionally trained teacher. So where will our teachers come from? This is a question that I think teacher-training programs (i.e. universities) need to address as well. With different types of educational programs being developing, there is a need for a different type of teacher. As a former teacher in a Montessori middle school, it was difficult finding teachers who understood (and valued) Montessori's methods and were able to put them into practice. There are specific Montessori training and certification programs available, but they are not as wide spread as traditional university training programs. My hope is that, prior to opening, we will have a significant amount of time (6-12 months) to work with an initial group of teachers to familiarize and prepare them for the educational program.
