If you were building a first class medical facility you wouldn't succeed without recruiting and involving medical professionals. You wouldn't build a first class art museum without artists and art historians. The charter movement is replete with stories of "moms who met and started a school," but the rest of the story is that the founders sought out curriculum and instructional expertise by way of exhaustive research and consultation. The life cycle of a school usually includes the founders identifying an instructional leader, often the person hired to direct the school, whose philosophy fits well with the mission set forth by the founders and who provides expertise around pedagogy and learning.
