In my setting, I encourage students to define their own sense of educational achievement. They are still accountable for the same core classes but they can choose how to take these classes. They can also request to substitute activities of their own to replace assigned activities, as long as the same goals are met.
On the subject of elective classes, I encourage students to design their own. I have a special planning form where they identify goals and measurable objectives. It is then my job to give the class academic rigor and find a teacher/mentor. This aspect of our program could be easily transferred to a mainstream high school setting.
