Just some reality for some of us... 6/9/04 11:16 AM
Author: Gail Srebnik View Thread

I realize this topic is trying to generate examples on how to deal with the facilities issue in creative ways. However, I know I am not alone (as a charter school director) when I say that lack of adequate state funding for facilities acquisition and renovation make running our schools financially perilous. My school is in a small rural town with no corporations and philanthropists and though I manage to gain some grant money each year most foundations want to fund 'projects' not buildings. I fear that many charter schools trying to stay small (our design has us at 77 students now; not to go beyond 90 eventually) and having to pay off mortgages while increasing salaries and meeting rising costs for benefits and materials will be forced to fold. Each year we come close to this point and we only manage because our salaries are below state averages and our parents contribute almost all of our paper goods. I do not mean to gripe but I do not see any topics that allow for really discussing issues like this.
