With federal support, the Center for School Change has done a report called Smaller, Safer, Saner Successful Schools (Try saying that 5 times, quickly) :-)
The report is available for free downloading at www.centerforschoolchange.org - in the publications section of our website. More than 40,000 people have downloaded it from our website or from the www.edfacilities.org website - another terrific website re facilities.
In the report, we document charters that are sharing facilities with social service agencies, like
* the Mesa Arts Academy/Boys and Girls Club, or
the Arizona Agribusiness Charter, sharing space with a community college,
Vaughn charter, sharing space with a medical clinic, etc. etc.
or the nation's first charter, City Academy, sharing space with a St. Paul recreation center.
Shared facilities seem to me to be an important part of the facilities questions. Costs can be much lower than a stand alone building. And sharing space can help provide terrific services to charter students, faculty and families.
Shared facilities is not the total solution but I think it is an important thing to consider.
