Charter Schools are recognized as step children of public schools. A child thrown into the lap of school districts by governmental changes that was introduced by those not desiring of their children to attend the "common" mans' school. But unlike most charter schools, there are many that either echo a commonality or provide enrichment toward their parents (school districts). Take for example Sarasota (Florida) Military Academy, which is currently within its fourth year of existence as a charter school, that has broken State and Federal standards in providing adequate education to those in attendance. A Five Star School in its second year of existence, given full certification by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities in its third year, and is breaking ground on forming its sister campus for Middle School Students. This school has a waiting list (High School) seven years long, with some parents applying for their children who are currently in pre-school. Mr. Robert Lechner , an administrator for this fine school is the watchman in which he provides the Commander with adequate ideas about policies and procedures that may effect growth in academics. This institution has given new meaning to the phrase "Charter School" in that it is both a military academy and a public school. Funding comes from the Department of Defense in paying retired NCOs and Officers employed to instruct within this arena, and it provides equipment and uniforms to the student body. The Department of Education, through the local school district, provides adequate funding, per child, that provides funds for civilian instructors (State Certified to teach), equipment, etc. The established P.T.A. (S.M.A.P.T.A.)provides fund raisers and open doors to established businesses in gathering financial, tax exempt, funds that assist in the paying of established bills for utilities, etc. The Sarasota Military Academy, has passed the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Examination for student achievement with scores that fall above and beyond the public schools within the State, while having many of their graduate cadets enter Universities with full scholarships. Two have been invited to attend West Point Military Academy, while posting academic G.P.A.s above many already enrolled at West Point. This Charter School, although in need of financial assistance just like many others, has found parental guidance is the key to success. Perhaps the public school should address parental involvement more closely.
