I agree with the idea that AYP is imperfect but at least a step toward the ultimate goal of measuring the growth in learning for each individual child. It is important to recognize both how well we are teaching each child and how we evaluate what concepts are really important to teach. "Value added" has meaning to me in the context of Native American education, because reaching AYP without a sense of having our students feel empowered for who they areis a hollow victory. I would think that for many at-risk students like ours, learning to love learning and to continue to seek solutions through further learning is the ultimate goal.
