Aaron Pallas (1989) states that all young people are at risk, or educationally disadvantaged, if they have been exposed to inadequate or inappropriate educational experiences in the family, school, or community. Therefore, it appears that a charter school that can help parents and community leaders expose students to adequate and appropriate educational experiences no longer has at-risk students. Success seems imminent.
The next question then is "What are adequate and appropriate educational experiences for so called at risk (of failing)students? Is it mainstream sociocultural behaviors? How many charter schools are based on the learning differences among a variety of cultures? Are students just doing more seatwork? How are teachers prepared to work with these students? If we really want to talk about increasing success among a population of youngsters labled "at-risk" then I think we also need to talk about how current curriculums are "at risk" of failing our students.
