Oklahoma can have up to a three year term on charters and I agree that it is an important factor for charter school accountability. We have to "get it right" or we close.
Unfortunately for the people of Tulsa, one of the first charter schools was closed down by the sponsor (Tulsa Public School District) within a few weeks of opening back in 2000. I think it was due to several factors, like board turnover and an inadequate school facility. Anyway, the Tulsa District has used their bully pulpit to discourage more charter schools so Tulsa has only had three schools for three years now.
Charter school closings are evidence that the accountability factor for charter schools is working. I have yet to see a traditional public school here be closed for underperformance, they just keep on going.
So we really are under the microscope here in Tulsa as a charter school. We not only have to get it right, but we must be the very best we can in everything we do. And let's not lose sight of the fact that we are doing this for the kids!
