NCLB is ratcheting up the accountability stakes for all public schools. In what ways can charter schools benefit from this increased accountability? How can potential disparities between individual charter goals and a state's new AYP benchmarks be handled? How can charter schools deal with the pressure to concentrate attention solely on what the state will measure? How can individual charter schools cope with the financial costs of compliance (professional development for "highly qualified" status, assessment implementation, rapid transition of ESL students to mainstream classes, report preparation, etc.)?
