Mark, when you say we need to create a message that captures "generalizations of what is beneficient of charter school education," are you thinking about the schools and their educational programs, or are you thinking of chartering as a school reform strategy, or both? I find this distinction compelling (Ted Kolderie writes at length about this). Can there be an effective message that encompasses both a charter schools and a chartering movement? I wonder if this movement might one day be capable of embracing enough common teaching and learning principles such that we might someday talk about "charter teachers," "charter students," or even "charter parents?" We educators recoil from market language, but maybe we need to about the charter brand and defining the expectations associated with the term "charter." I hope we get into this more on Thursday during the Teaching and Learning discussions.
