In our state the media has a general predisposition in opposition to charter schools. The Public Information Officer for the state agency is a former school reporter for the local daily newspaper. This person is biased against charter schools, and that attitude is pervasive throughout the state capitol among Democratic Party office holders because of the influence of the teachers unions who oppose school reform and use propaganda to influence the media. Don't get me wrong I am progressive and pro union. I have tried to work with specific media reps and found their vitriolic opposition prevents me from even making any attempt to redirect it. Charter schools need to spend the money to hire publicists rather than depending upon the association reps who lack the skills to manage a public relations campaign.
