Curtis provides a very concrete approach. The availability of Public Relations Information Officers depends upon the size/location of our school districts. Thus, the approach will be different for rural versus suburban and urban schools. Our suburban schools often have a full-time position that works directly for the Superintendent's Office. In urban districts, there will be media specialists for the School Board Office as well as support staff for the Superintendent's office. In our rural schools, our District Administrators would be responsible for public relations. It would be wise for a charter school to hold a discussion regarding public information procedures with their authorizers to make certain hard feelings are not unnecessarily created and protocol is honored. I have made the mistake in the past of sending in a letter to the editor that was not supported by my employer. Thus my sensitivity to protocol.
