Nancy,
Good question, and very timly,
There have been numerous organizations that have been, and are important to the expansion of charter schools around the country, The Center for Education Reform, Charter Friends National Network, support from foundations, individuals and numerous regional organizations have helped in various, important ways.
However there is a need to expand and enhance the coordination and collaboration of these many groups and this important work. The National Charter School Leadership Council is organizing to bring these many supporters together to help achieve what you suggest.
Specifically, the NCSLC's purpose is to dramatically expand the charter movement and extend its principles throughout American education,
• Function as an effective, unified, national voice that explains and advocates for the charter school movement in the face of entrenched resistance.
• Create, maintain, and defend policy environments in which charter schools can succeed.
• Expand the number and variety of high-quality charter schools.
• Build and strengthen supporters and allies to advance these goals.
Primary activities will include:
• Federal policy development and liaison with policymakers.
• Providing liaison with other nation education organizations.
• Public relations, media, and advertising.
• Research and data gathering.
Success will still depend on the many "parts", those who support charter schools, working together with common purpose to expand these new public schools for the benefit of the students who will attend them. Coming up with the strategies that work, promoting academically successful schools, working with parents, policy leaders, community people, businesses etc regarding what is happening in America's charter public schools.
This is a glimpse, there is a lot of work to do as this dialogue indicates.
