Community & Media Relations Strategy 6/7/04 9:05 AM
Author: Michael Strait View Thread

I just want to reinforce Dan's statements here from the learning strategy point of view. It helps to remember that community members, including media professionals, are people, and we know a lot about how people learn
(http://www.nap.edu/html/howpeople1/notice.html) that we should use in developing a community & media relations strategy. For example, it would be a mistake simply to present community and media representatives (who are "novices" with respect to the issues) with just fully formed and tightly reasoned positions on the issues (i.e., "expert models") and assume that they, the novices, will learn effectively; what they will learn depends on how much they know already, and more importantly what conceptions or misconceptions they already hold. In plain English, don't just start talking; listen first. Find out what people already know, or think they know, and what they believe, and then target your message to address and build on what they already know and/or believe.
