CANEC Board Votes to Support Transition

08/14/2003

Dear CANEC Members:

As President of CANEC, and on behalf of the CANEC Board of Directors I am excited to report to you that the CANEC Board of Directors voted overwhelmingly yesterday to support CANEC's transition into the newly formed California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) and to place the issue before the CANEC membership for approval. The resolution that passed last night:

* Honors the right and obligation of CANEC members to approve the transfer/merger into this new organization as a result of the CANEC Board of Directors' vote of confidence.

* Creates a new, stronger association representing and supporting California's community of charter schools that is consistent with CANEC's original reinvention plan set forth in December 2002. Information about the reinvention and merger can be found at: http://www.canec.org/restructure.html#restructurehtml

* Assures representation of charter school operators on the governing board through a regionally elected Member Council that represents the organization's members.

* Reaffirms its commitment to advocate for and support all types of charter schools while ensuring that the organization is member-driven.

* Leverages support from the business and philanthropic communities by making them partners in the success of the charter school movement.

Over the next couple of weeks, CANEC Members (paid members as of July 31, 2003) will have the opportunity to vote on the transfer/merger into the California Charter Schools Association. Voting on the transfer/merger of CANEC into the CCSA will be initiated with ballots mailed out on Monday, August 18, 2003 and due back to the CANEC office by September 12, 2003. This gives CANEC members the time necessary to consider all information to make an informed decision.

Specifically, this vote to approve the transfer/merger of CANEC into CCSA will:

* Honor all membership service commitments through the March 2004 conference, or through your membership renewal date, whichever comes later, at which time expanded member services will be made available.

* Honor all CANEC employees positions in CCSA.

The CANEC Board of Directors is excited about this new opportunity and is eager to share information with you so that you are able to make an informed decision about the transfer/merger with the CCSA. In addition, the Board of Directors of the CCSA will also be available to answer any questions about their vision for the charter school movement over the next decade and beyond. For a review of all documentation relating to CANEC's reinvent and to the transfer, visit: http://www.canec.org/newcoinformation.html

Additionally, CANEC is sponsoring regional meetings between August 22 — August 28 across the state to provide our members and other charter school operators the opportunity to meet the CEO of the newly formed California Charter Schools Association, Caprice Young. Caprice will be sharing with you information about the new Association, its vision and goals. It will give you an opportunity to personally hear and learn more about this vital new organization as well as to ask questions. To learn more about Caprice and her accomplishments, visit www.canec.org/aboutcaprice.html.
