Charter Schools in Action: Renewing Public Education

http://www.pupress.princeton.edu/titles/6783.html
Finn, Manno — two former U.S. assistant secretaries of education — and Vanourek provide a mix of interviews and empirical data to examine the operation and promise of charter schools as the reinvention of public education. The book is the result of a two-year research study which included visits over 100 schools, hundreds of interviews, and a comprehensive literature review. The book seeks to offer answers to the questions: What are charter schools? How have they attracted bipartisan political support? How are they succeeding? Where are they failing? What challenges do they face? Are they the answer to America's public education crisis? The twelve chapters of the book are organized into two parts. The first part illustrates what is currently known about charter schools. The second examines what the charter school effort means for renewing public education. The book concludes with a depiction of American public school education in the year 2010, reinvented according to charter school principles.
