Job Description: The Adams School in Castine, Maine has begun a search for a successor to Todd Nelson, who will leave the position at the end of June, 2010 to be head of a school in another state.
Adams is a K-8 public school of 57 students that enjoys an unusually creative and independent curriculum, enthusiastic support of the town and parent body, and unique potential for a dynamic school leader who loves teaching and working with a dedicated staff. Castine is a beautiful, historic town on Penobscot Bay and home of the Maine Maritime Academy.
We, the School Board and community at large, are seeking an experienced and progressive Teaching-Principal to start July 1, 2010. As well as teaching (the current principal is responsible for the upper grades Language Arts/Social Studies curriculum, but that does not necessarily have to be the focus of the new person in this position), we expect the candidate for this position to be qualified to fulfill the following roles:
-Candidate must be energetic, creative and envision education as a free-flowing, fluid experience accessible through many diverse opportunities;
-Many extraordinary programs exist within the life of the school and perpetuation and stewardship of them is a must;
-Responsible for all activities involving students and teachers;
-Educational leader of the school;
- Chief articulator of school programs, philosophy, expectations of students and teachers, and behavioral guidelines;
-Responsible for day-to-day operation;
-Observe, supervise, and help evaluate faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervise the teaching process;
-Provide an orderly, controlled environment in which learning can take place and reflect a school climate that is supportive and maintains high morale;
-Ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations;
-Make recommendations to the School Board about the retention, hiring and assignment of faculty;
-Strive for unity, harmony and cooperation through tact, helpfulness, respect, and recognition of individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each teacher;
-Conduct regular meetings with faculty which will deal both with routine school matters and also the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational and philosophical interest;
-Oversee the coordination of any co-curricular activity programs of the school;
-Assist in the planning and presentation of daily school meetings;
-Provide for the academic guidance of all students; maintain complete academic records and oversee the grading and reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement;
-Establish guidelines for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline consistent with school policies; monitor students’ adherence to established school rules;
-Be a visible presence in all areas of the School; work toward a resolution of all problems-both routine and unique-as they arise;
-Serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures;
-Oversee the budget and expenditures for the school; and
-Communicate issues to the School Board, the parents, and the community as a whole.
Salary and benefits are competitive for Maine public schools.
Principal’s Certificate required or a candidate must be able to obtain it within a reasonable amount of time.
