Job Description:
School Mission Plans are currently underway to open the Dr. Muriel Petioni Charter School for Scholarship, Health and Leadership in fall 2009. The School will be located in Central Harlem (CSD #5, Region 10) and serve middle school students in grades 6-8. The mission of the Petioni Charter School will be to nurture all human intelligence to help students and staff achieve their full intellectual and social potential. The Petioni Charter School will accomplish this by creating a student-centered, cooperative learning environment that will champion student achievement, advance postsecondary education, promote healthy life choices and encourage community leadership. School Governance & Leadership The Petioni CS will be governed by a founding Board comprised of educators, business and community leaders, health and social work professionals. The Board will provide oversight while day-to-day school site operations will be led by a Principal who will report directly to the School’s Board. The Principal will be ultimately responsible for school and student performance, hiring and managing all staff. In addition, the principal will provide day-to-day management of the School’s education program, while the School’s Chief Financial Officer will oversee day-to-day fiscal management and non-academic site operations. Responsibilities The Petioni CS Principal will serve as the School’s instructional leader responsible for the direction supervision, implementation and program effectiveness of all curricular, instructional, student assessment and professional development areas. The Principal’s responsibilities also will include management and administration of all school activities including: management of day-to-day operations; overseeing instruction, curriculum and other education programming; student admissions and re-enrollment; parent relations, student and community outreach; resource allocation; staff evaluation and training; hiring and evaluation of teachers and staff; oversight of budget preparation and implementation including compliance with established financial controls and budgetary goals (assisted by the School’s CFO and Board); pursuance of grants, strategic alliances and other resources (assisted by the School’s Development and Community Relations Director and Board); and providing a monthly oral and written report on the School’s academic and financial progress to the Board. In addition, the Petioni CS Principal will be responsible for business and community outreach including working with the Board and the Development and Community Relations Director to create and present a school brand (public relations), establishing relationships with prospective funders, collaborating with education and human service programs/institutions and connecting with cultural and civic organizations. Communicating and collaborating with the Harlem and charter community will be especially important as the Principal will serve as the Petioni CS emissary and advocate in the public and private sectors. The Principal will include the aforementioned items in his/her monthly report to the Petioni CS Board in collaboration with the School’s CFO. The Petioni CS Principal will manage the School’s CFO and will be ultimately accountable for student and fiscal performance. S/He must participate in forums and training opportunities in nonprofit management, charter school governance and other pertinent professional growth experiences.

Qualifications:
Experience & Qualifications Candidates must have management experience in an education organization or school serving at-risk pre-adolescents. S/He will have a working knowledge of the educational and psycho-emotional needs and issues facing early adolescents – particularly those from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Candidates must have at least five years of demonstrated experience managing a successful nonprofit, education institution, district or charter school. His/her experience must include program development, instructional leadership, staff hiring and training, budget development and management, compliance reporting, fund development, staff management and human resources development and public relations. Highly sought after candidates will be able to “think outside of the box,” provide a track record of innovation and demonstrate effectiveness in working with diverse groups of people. Candidates must exhibit strong skills in strategic planning, verbal and written communication. S/He must have received a bachelor’s degree (although a masters degree is preferred) in education and/or business administration, nonprofit management, public administration or a related field. A school administrative license is a plus, but not required. However, the successful candidate will have at least ten years of post-collegiate work experience.

Salary & Benefits: Start Date The Principal will not begin full time work until February/March 2009, however, it is expected that s/he will be available on a part-time basis beginning June/July 2008. Compensation Until full-time status is reached, the Principal will be paid on a per diem basis as his/her services are needed. Full-time salary will be competitive with similar positions among NYC charter and district schools and similar nonprofits, and will be commensurate with experience. The Dr. Petioni CS will offer all full-time staff a health and retirement benefits package (to be determined).
